The Assured Compliance System treats continuous flow streams employing "hybrid batch technology" developed by Burt Process Equipment, a leader in pH neutralization systems for over thirty years. Typical continuous flow systems do not provide assurance of a properly treated waste stream with flow diversion or shutdown should an out-of-range pH condition occur. This can frequently occur during a concentrated dump or other special conditions. The Assured Compliance System is composed of a multi-chamber treatment tank. The first chamber is a passive, equalization chamber allowing a retention time of five minutes. The flow cascades to the treatment chamber. The treatment chamber provides a retention time for a minimum of fifteen minutes. A heavy-duty gear mixer provides reaction tank turnover of two volumes per minute to assure instantaneous mixing with the reagent chemistry. The reagent chemistries are typically sulfuric acid and caustic soda. However, other reagents including carbon dioxide gas and magnesium hydroxide are also available which are less hazardous in handling.

A recirculation pump on the reaction tank provides several functions. The reagent is injected into the recirculation return loop. The pH is controlled by a wet tap pH probe/transmitter in the pump suction side of the recirculation loop. This design allows for ease of maintenance of the pH electrode and provides a reagent dilution turndown prior to entry into the reaction chamber. A flow sensor monitors proper operation of the recirculation system. Electronic proportional metering pumps feed the reagents from reagent tanks. A motor-operated valve is provided on the discharge to close if the pH is out-of-range. Freeboard is provided above the drain invert elevation to provide five minutes of additional retention and treatment before flowing to the upper diversion/overflow invert. The effluent leaving the process is monitored by a second self-cleaning pH probe in an effluent monitoring wet well assembly providing permanent record of pH by means of a circular chart recorder.
